The Bottom Line is just because your favorite tour player is using that Pro V1 or HX Tour or Nike One ball…does that mean you should be using it also? And if you should be using it, or want to try it, do you have to pay up to $50 a dozen just for that privilege? The short answer is…yes go ahead and try it and no, you don’t have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for top balls, there is another way! I found that other way by shopping online.
About 3 years ago an article was written about the then up and coming industry of premium recycled golf balls, otherwise known as used, refurbished, or experienced, but now it is time for another one because the golf ball industry has changed and the used golf ball industry is much more sophisticated.
While wandering through the local mega golf store, lost somewhere in the mammoth wall of golf balls, I overheard a group of enthusiastic young men cooing over the Pro V1, Nike One and Callaway HX Tour. One of the guys stated that he loses about 4 golf balls a round and he really didn’t want to spend $47 a dozen, “but what choice do you have” stated one buddy. While being the nosey inquisitive guy I am, I shuffled over and asked him what his handicap was, “I shoot to a 16” he said. I immediately asked, “Have you considered buying premium recycled golf balls online?” “NO, why would I do that” he laughed. “Well,” I said, “ how about the fact that you can try any one of these golf balls you see here on the wall, in just about the same condition as new and pay up to 80% off the price you see here”. After a moment of silence and pondering his friend stated sort of sheepishly, “you know those Pro V1’s I used in yesterday’s round? Yup, those were used balls I bought online”.
And that’s how it happens, One friend secretly saves big dollars on his golf ball purchases, and because the quality is so good he is the only one who ever knows they are used. “No wonder you offered to pay for the round of beers!” I overheard as I was walking away.
Now that we have established that you can save a lot of money buying your favorite golf balls online, lets explore how do you decide which golf ball is right for you and where can you buy them online?
I see people buying golf balls that are very expensive, and are, if anything, hurting their games. The fact is mid-line golf balls now are far better than top end golf balls made only a few years ago and are actually the best balls for your average golfer. No longer does a golfer have to spend a lot of money just to get the ball that suits their game.
I am going to focus on balls for the average golfer; yup that’s the majority of us golfers. Some of the more popular one’s are now, Maxfli Noodle, Precept Laddie, Strata Tour Straight, Nike Distance and all of those other low-compression balls that are invading the market. At most online sources, you can buy any of these low compression balls starting at $3.99 dozen All of these balls are so much better for the average golfer…even sometimes low-handicappers and here's the reasons why:
1) Top end balls, such as the "phenomenon ball" Pro V1, are made for low-handicap golfers, therefore, they spin more and are easier to curve... also easier to slice or hook. Many mid to high handicappers scoop these up expecting to become the next Ernie Els, when this ball is made for only the type of player that can CRUSH the ball high with a lot of spin. This profile is not 90% of golfers...in fact it's maybe about 5%, and even that's kind of pushing it. You'll most likely end up losing yardage and performance with this type of ball. However that being said, you still may want to see what the hype is all about – but why pay up to $50 a dozen when you know you are going to lose a bunch? Its simple economics, buy premium Pro V1’s for $1.33 a ball instead of $4.16 a ball, by shopping online.
2) The low compression balls will give a lot more spring off the face, even for a hard swinger, the materials are just so much better now. Slower swingers are going to get a lot more distance out of a ball like this.
3) The best part that separates this new generation of balls from the last is you don't have to sacrifice feel. Because they're a softer compression, they feel softer and you still have control around the greens.
4) Finally, the price is so much better with these balls. A box of Noodles is half the price of a box of Pro V1s new, so imagine what the prices are online for new looking used balls. Well, online you could buy 3 dozen for the price of 1 dozen brand new.
This whole craze started with the explosion of enthusiasm with the Precept Lady, an 80 compression ball that had a pretty nice cover on it. People were noticing more distance and a softer feel. So what followed? The introduction of the Precept Laddie, the male version that featured a slightly lower ball flight and more spin. This lower ball flight allowed the harder swinging men to benefit even more instead of having the higher trajectory ball just balloon on them. Then came the rush of low-compression men's balls. Women's balls became almost extinct because men's balls were lower compression than woman’s! So what do you end up with? A better price point ball that the average golfers and the (dare we say) bad golfers will hit longer, straighter, higher, and not sacrifice feel, and that the better golfer will enjoy as well! So leave your ego behind, buy your golf balls online at your favorite site and try one of these low-compression balls that might actually drop those scores a bit.
Here's a small list of what's available, try a bunch; find the one that suits you.
Maxfli Noodle
These went like wildfire last year. Very low compression ball and great in the cold if nothing else.
Dunlop Loco
Kind of the brother ball to the Maxfli Noodle.
Precept Lady and Laddie
The lady and laddie have a higher ball flight and the laddie spins a little more. Both are around a 65 compression. Get the ball flight that suits you best.
Strata Tour Straight
Super low compression! Has an arrow on the side for lining up putts and has Teflon on the cover for reducing slices and hooks. It actually does work!
Nike Power Distance Super Soft
Nike's version of it.
Titleist Nxt Tour and Distance
Wasn't the softest, didn't spin a whole lot, and not much yardage gain at all.
Titleist DT Solo
Also a great low compression ball – very popular!
